Fifth Annual Report on the Status of Women and Girls in CA - Released Today (3/30/16)

On March 30, 2016, Mount Saint Mary’s University released its fifth annual Report on the Status of Women and Girls in California, and commemorated Women’s History Month with a day of inspiration and reflection as part of a public event at the Skirball Cultural Center. More than 1,000 people attended, answering the Mount’s call to action to help improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.

Mount Saint Mary’s is committed to ensuring that women are afforded equal opportunities to engage in society. As a women’s university, we are uniquely positioned to create this type of publication, which is compiled annually by our faculty. We are honored that this research is used by community advocates, educators and legislators to effect change across California and beyond.

A cursory search of presidential candidate Donald Trump's quotes produces a litany of profane and offensive rhetoric - especially against women. Check out this ad created by a conservative SuperPAC - yes, we're shocked too - of just a sampling of misogynistic things Donald Trump has said - publicly and unapologetically.

June 7th is rapidly approaching.

All over the country, NWPC chapters are pitching in to help elect Hillary; in fact, shout out to our sister state caucuses, Florida, Missouri, and Ohio for the March 15th primaries. As you may know, Secretary Clinton swept her opponent in the Democratic primaries on Tuesday, and we couldn't be prouder -- but we cannot slow down or take anything for granted. To do so will create a higher likelihood that Donald Trump will be moving into the White House next January.  To that end, we are excited to announce that we are in the process of setting up caucus wide phone banks in support of our endorsed candidate, fmr. Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
The next big dates for Primary states are March 22nd in Arizona and March 26th in Washington State. Then it's on to New York on April 19th and Maryland and Pennsylvania on April 26th followed by California and New Jersey in June. It is NWPC's intent to continue all our efforts in every state to win as MANY DELEGATES as possible and we hope many of you pursue being a delegate! That said, all eyes are rumored to be looking at our great state of California, as well as, New York. Stay tuned on how you can help us GOTV (get out the vote) for HRC (Hillary Rodham Clinton).

Donate through NWPC's "Hillraiser Link" || Volunteer  and make some calls to other states (training provided at link) || Enhance any upcoming travel by joining fellow supporters at events nearby || Educate others about our issues and priorities || And stand strong against the internet trolls by checking out Correct the Record

How will you help make HERstory? - From NWPC CA

Our Time is NOW.

"Daleiden told one volunteer that it 'would be really good to talk tonight' with one doctor 'now that she’s been drinking.. . .Daleiden told his associates that their ‘goal’ was to trap people into ‘saying something really messed up.'  Daleiden urged them to offer massive financial profits for fetal tissue and to try to get abortion providers to use the phrase 'fully intact baby'"

- Judge William Orrick III, in a 42-page order, granting a preliminary injunction to prohibit defendants David Daleiden, Troy Newman, and the Center for Medical Progress from publishing recordings illegally taken at National Abortion Federation meetings.

Time and time again, our members, allies, and supporters are asked "why women"? This is why.

As you know, the July 2015 online posting of surreptitiously made several videos purporting to show employees of Planned Parenthood clinics illegally selling aborted fatal for profit had a devastating impact on Planned Parenthood's efforts to deliver affordable reproductive health care to women across the land. Day after day, year after year, there are a multitude of lawsuits from the conservative right wing constituencies to take away a woman's right to choose. The order from Judge Orrick outlines and calls out every deceptive tool those at the Center for Medical Progress have used in their campaign to shut Planned Parenthood down with false narratives.

We need more pro-choice women elected, regardless of party preference, because they will fight for women's reproductive rights rather than trying to defund Planned Parenthood. They will defend our right to choose, rather than inciting anti-choice protesters to cause irreparable harm to the nation's largest women's health provider.

2016 will be a groundbreaking year for women across the country as we work to elect Hillary Clinton as President and support the multitude of progressive, pro-choice women candidates running for office.
As we stand in solidarity with Planned Parenthood to protect access reproductive health services and affirm reproductive choice as a fundamental right for women, we must continue to make our collective voices heard.

The National Women's Political Caucus represents a critical constituency and an emerging voter bloc that is the margin of victory. And YOU are the strength of our organization. We cannot do what we do to reach pro-choice voters, elect progressive women, and stand up for important issues that impact our community without you.

That's why we need you to be active and stay active with our Caucus. If you haven't renewed your membership, do so today.  If you're already a member, share the love and ask a friend to join you. If you want to help get pro-choice, progressive women elected, donate to our Political Action Committee.

Thank you for being a part of our HERstory.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day

Here’s to hoping that by International Women’s Day 2017 women the world over won’t have to fight for their human right to reproductive health and justice. To having more than only 25 sitting female Heads of State. To a world where gender-based violence in all its brutal, grotesque forms—including FGM, human trafficking, sexual assault, honor-based crimes, rape as a weapon in war—has been nearly eliminated. Where girls can get an education equal to boys without threat and fear of violence. Where women are able to dress as they wish and not be forced to cover up in order not to ‘seduce men’. Where women don’t need male guardians to leave their homes or gain financial capital.

Big goals for the next #IWD, but maybe for this year we can stop asking “can women REALLY have it all?!?!” because we would never ask the same as a man.

Maybe we can stop focusing on a woman’s cadence (she’s too shrill!) and more on the substance of her speech.

We can stop seeing “FEMINISM” as the F-word. We can work a little harder to curb rape culture. Maybe this year, we can all get involved with community-based or international organizations that help to empower women locally or globally.

To the women and allies who are working to break down the glass ceiling in STEM, in business, in law; struggling against oppressive regimes; finding their way as survivors; fighting for reproductive rights—thank you.

We know the journey is long and we might not personally see the fruits of our labor but you are building a legacy and foundation. Your work is valued and important. One day we might not need an anthem of empowerment telling us that girls run the world, we might not need a special day that honors us.

But until then, we have to continue to fight for ourselves, and for our sisters the world over.
