What Will It Take To Elect More Women In Los Angeles?

CALL TO ACTION:
WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO ELECT MORE WOMEN IN LOS ANGELES?

Wednesday, June 5, 6:00-8:00 PM
at the University of Southern California Ronald Tutor Campus Center
The Forum (450)
3607 Trousdale Parkway, Los Angeles, CA map

The 2013 citywide elections shed a light on the need for more women to seek and win elected office in the City of Los Angeles. Of the ten largest cities nationwide, Los Angeles has the lowest percentage of women seated on the city council or holding citywide elected office. And in San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco, women hold over 30% of the city council seats. Los Angeles hasn't seen these levels since the late 1990's.
How did the second largest city in the nation and the largest city in California get to this point? More importantly, how can we reverse this decline?
Join our panel of experts in a town hall discussion as California Women Lead issues a Call to Action.
  • Cindy Miscikowski, President, Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners and former member, Los Angeles City Council

Congressional Panel on 20-week abortion ban: All Men

Is it deja vu? Nope. It's real life and really terrifying. Today, a panel of only men in the House of Representatives is deciding whether to move forward a national ban on abortion after 20 weeks. All men. Zero women. Just like last year, when Republicans allowed zero women to testify on birth control.

It's unacceptable and we want to push back against this right now. Want to help? Share this image with everyone you know. Tell them that you will not stand for another all-male congressional committee deciding women's healthcare.

Where are the women?

Share this message far and wide. Let's do this.

June 1 Political Women Meet Up

Did you know that a decade ago women were 30% of the California legislature?
Today women are only 25%

In 2003, women of color accounted for 44% of the women legislators. Today only one woman of color serves in the CA State Senate.

We can change this. And we know how.

close the gap CA is a statewide campaign to find talented, progressive women to run and win seats in the California legislature in 2014 and 2016. With focus and a targeted strategy, we can ‘close the gap’ and not just the gender gap. When we elect progressive women, we take steps to close the school funding gap, the access gap to affordable health and reproductive care, and the growing gap between the wealthy and those in poverty.

I can't think of a better group of people to have fought together with on this campaign.

We got in this race -- not because it was going to be easy -- but because we love Los Angeles and we care deeply about the future direction of this city.

Whether you made calls, knocked on doors, gave money, or simply told your neighbors about our campaign, you should celebrate the fact that you created something far more important and longer lasting than a single campaign for a single election.

You should celebrate, because you drew attention to our failing public schools, and helped put innovative plans to fix them on the table.

And you showed the daughters, sisters, wives and mothers of Los Angeles that one day, we will have a woman as Mayor.

I may not have been able to break through the glass ceiling last night, but you sure helped me put a crack in it, and because of your work, the next woman candidate in my shoes will crash right through it.

This is the city where I was born and raised, where I went to school, where I built my career, and now my wonderful family. And throughout my life as an Angeleno, I've always believed in the power of bringing people together to get things done.

So, I'm not going anywhere. Now we must look to the future, because as President Bill Clinton noted, "Los Angeles is a great city with equally great challenges."

I am determined to continue fighting for all Angelenos, to cut waste and increase efficiency, and above all, to keep our streets and neighborhoods safe.

And I hope you will join me in doing all that you can to support our new mayor, Eric Garcetti, to be a part of the solution to these very challenges.

Congratulations to Mayor-Elect Eric Garcetti and his campaign. I sincerely wish him the very best, both on a personal level, and because his success is critical to the success of the greatest city in the world.

This election is over, but we still have a lot of work to do to lead Los Angeles forward -- and I can't wait to see what we do next.

Thank you so much,

Wendy [Greuel]

We have some good news to share.

close the gap CA is a statewide recruiting campaign to find talented, progressive women to run and win seats in the California legislature in 2014 and 2016. Over the past 10 years, women’s representation in our state legislature has declined from 30% to 25%; women of color dropped from 44% of women legislators to just 32% today.

Fortunately, we can reverse the decline. In 2014 and 2016, nearly 50% of Assembly and Senate seats will open up.  Progressive women can win many of them.

With focus and a well-funded strategy, we can ‘close the gap’ and not just the gender gap. Research shows that when we elect progressive women, we are taking big steps toward closing the school funding gap, the access gap to affordable health and reproductive care, and the growing gap between the wealthy and those in poverty.

Working with women’s political and civic organizations, past and current legislators and with Educate Our State, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of CA and women in the forefront of anti-poverty efforts, we can identify, recruit and connect promising prospects to the resources that will enable them to run and win.

Please join us and spread the word. If you belong to an organization, ask your board to sign on as an ally at closethegapca.org. Like us on Facebook.  Follow us on Twitter.  Write a blog about the sorry state of affairs and campaign to change direction.
